The mission of the Division is to provide leadership and support to local health departments, other medical providers and community-based organizations in the prevention, surveillance and treatment of HIV, other sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis and other complications. We are dedicated to the provision of education, information, and health care services that promote and protect the health of all Virginians. Hepatitis C Testing and Information are Available!

Hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) are liver infections which cause death to between 15,000 and 17,000 people yearly in the United States.  Between 125,000 and 155,000 Virginia residents are living with chronic HBV and/or HCV at present.  The vast majority are unaware of their hepatitis infection.  In August 2006, the Virginia Department of Health’s Division of Disease Prevention began a Viral Hepatitis Outreach program in five health districts [Click HERE to go the VDH Viral Hepatitis website where you can find listings for HCV Testing Sites throughout Virginia].

If you would like to get tested for HCV in one of these Health Districts, please call to determine the time each individual health department sees STD patients. This service will be available to all patients seen in the STD clinics.  This outreach also includes a free three-dose series of a very safe and effective vaccine to prevent another serious form of hepatitis: Hepatitis B [HBV]. HCV testing is available to those who report one of the following 5 risk factors for HCV:

  • Intravenous Drug Use [IDU]—even one time, in the past
  • Having sex with a person who is HCV-positive
  • HIV-positive status
  • A blood transfusion—even one time—in a person’s life
  • Hemophilia [a blood clotting disorder]

Please note that HBV vaccine is offered to all STD patients in every Health District throughout Virginia to all STD patients regardless of whether or not they have risk factors for HCV.
