Virginia Immunization Survey

Purpose of Survey
Annually, the Virginia Department of Health conducts a retrospective survey of children in day care facilities, headstart programs, and kindergartens to measure statewide immunization rates.

Definitions

DTaP - Though some children may have received DTP instead of DTaP, in this report, DTP and DTaP are not differentiated.

Polio - Refers to both OPV and IPV.

MMR - Refers to the first dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella combination vaccine.

HiB - Haemophilus influenza, type B vaccine.

Hep B - Hepatitis B vaccine.

Var - Varicella vaccine.

Immunization Rates - A ratio of the number of children having defined vaccines to the number of assessed children in that age range at 24 months of age.

Methods of Survey
All students enrolled in Virginia public and private day care centers, headstart programs, and kindergartens are candidates for assessment. Using a statistical technique known as probability proportional to size, approximately 12,000 children are selected and examined for immunizations and their dates of administration. Using the CoCASA assessment software, immunization rates for vaccine series completion at 24 months of age and at school entry are determined. All data are handled confidentially.
