Tanning, whether from the sun or indoor tanning beds, may cause skin cancer and other possible injurious health effects. Consumers concerned about these effects should review the Consumer Information page. Consumers who are injured while using a commercial tanning bed should report the injury to the Department of Health's Radiological Health Program for possible investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Tanning bed owners and operators are regulated at both the state and federal level. There are no state tanning regulations. The State Tanning Law is specific enough that there is no need for more detailed regulations. Consumers should contact the Commonwealth's Attorney for the jurisdiction that the violation is alleged to have occurred. Tanning bed operators should review the information on the Tanning Bed Operator's page
Please note: Effective July 1, 2007 the Tanning Law was amended.
