Get Smart Virginia


"Get Smart Virginia, Know When Antibiotics Work"

Get Smart Virginia is a partnership of professional organizations, health plans, community organizations, industry partners and academic institutions that aims to reduce the problem of antibiotic resistance in Virginia. We are accomplishing this by educating consumers about appropriate antibiotic use.

House Joint Resolution No. 384 endorses the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) regarding the use of antibiotics.

Mission Statement

To promote the judicious use of antibiotics and to reduce the problem of antibiotic resistance in Virginia


To increase consumer knowledge, attitudes and awareness of antibiotic resistance and appropriate antibiotic use.

To provide educational resources for consumers, civic and community organizations and health care providers on the appropriate use of antibiotics.

To support the judicious and clinically appropriate use of antibiotics by health care practitioners in the treatment and management of viral upper respiratory infections.

To facilitate and encourage antimicrobial resistance education in hospitals by coordinating efforts of stakeholders and providers.

To collect data on consumer knowledge about appropriate antibiotic use.
