In 1947, the General Assembly passed legislation requiring “each county and city to establish and maintain a local health department.” Seven years later, legislation permitted the Virginia Department of Health to organize these local health departments into 35 health districts to achieve efficiencies in operations. Today, VDH comprises state and local offices, all working together enhance public health for residents of Virginia.
VDH’s Office of Community Health Services provides centralized planning, oversight and management of the programs and operations of the health districts.
