Alternative Onsite Sewage Systems

Emergency Regulations

The Emergency Regulations for alternative onsite sewage systems took effect on April 7, 2010. You can review the emergency regulations here. The regulations establish performance, operation, and monitoring requirements and horizontal setbacks for alternative onsite sewage systems (AOSS) necessary to protect public health and the environment. The new regulations are supplemental to existing 12VAC5-610, Sewage Handling and Disposal Regulations (SHDR), which contains permitting and other requirements for onsite sewage systems, including AOSS. The new regulations require that a licensed operator visit each AOSS on a mandated frequency and file a report. To search for a licensed operator please visit the DPOR website (hint: typing an asterisk in the name field will show all search results).
