Sewage & Water

To protect surface and ground water and insure safe drinking water, we permit private wells and sewage systems. We monitor testing of public water supplies. We investigate reports of raw sewage or other reports of ground water contamination.

Construction permits for well and sewage disposal systems are valid for 18 months. If you don't plan to build within that timeframe or want to find out if land is suitable for a drainfield prior to purchase, apply for a certification letter. You may also hire a private consultant to evaluate the soils for you. To search for a licensed Soil Evaluator please visit the DPOR website (hint: if you type an asterisk in the name field you will be able to see all licensed evaluators).

The Application for a Sewage Disposal and/or Water Supply Permit package consists of the four pages. The first form is an instruction sheet for you to keep; the other three must be filled out and submitted together to your local health department:

CEU/CE Courses for licensed Evaluators, Installers and Operators:

The Central Shenandoah Health District (CSHD) does not give preferential treatment to any company or agency providing CEU/CE courses. CSHD does recognize the challenge of finding local trainings/courses to meet these requirements and will, when possible, provide contact information for known trainings/courses occurring in and around the district. Companies providing such courses may submit course information and dates to cshdinfo@vdh.virginia.gov for consideration. Please contact the listed sponsor(s) for more information.
