Health Services

The Central Shenandoah Health District has a number of programs and services designed to protect the health and well being of families within the district. Our goal is to help protect your family's health.


Most services require an appointment, however, there are some services available on a walk-in basis, please call ahead to your local health department for more information or to make an appointment.

WIC

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) offers nutrition and breastfeeding services and consultation through the local health department.

Immunizations

At the health department we offer immunizations for all ages.  We give immunizations for school entry as well as vaccines for international travel.  We also have flu, pneumonia and zoster vaccines available.  CSHD Immunizations Page

Maternity Services

Our goal is to provide high quality, comprehensive maternity services to women who may experience barriers to prenatal care.  Full service maternity care clinics with a nurse practitioner are available for qualifying mothers in our Staunton, Waynesboro and Lexington health departments.  All of our other health department offices provide maternity care coordination.

Sexually Transmitted Infections

Our STI clinics focus on testing and treating sexually transmitted infections. We also provide educational and preventative services. 

All of these services are offered at all of our local health departments.  Make an appointment by calling your local health  department.

There is no cost to answer questions. When there is a cost for services, it will be according to you or your family’s ability to pay.

Family Planning

Family planning helps prevent unplanned pregnancy by assisting clients in finding a birth control method best suited to their needs and educating them on making good choices.

Family planning staff also provides counseling and education on a variety of health issues particular to the client’s needs. The clinic sees both males and females from beginning of puberty to about age 49.

Pregnancy test clinic
This clinic is designed as the point of entry for women who have not had a pregnancy test administered by a health professional. With a positive pregnancy test education is offered on the importance of folic acid, prenatal vitamins are issued, and referrals are made.

Dental Services

The Dental Team strives to teach our patients and their parents at each check-up the importance of good dental health, and good oral hygiene.  

Our dental team provides services at the Harrisonburg, Waynesboro, and Lexington health departments.

Many preventive and restorative dental services are provided to our patients.  These may include:

    •   Six-month dental cleanings
    •   Dental exams
    •   Fluoride treatment/varnish
    •   Dental x-rays
    •   Sealants
    •   Tooth-colored and silver fillings
    •   Root canals
    •   Extractions
    •   Stainless steel and porcelain crowns
    •   Emergency dental treatment.

Harrisonburg:

The Rockingham/Harrisonburg dental department is located at 110 N. Mason St., Harrisonburg, VA 22803, in the BASEMENT of the Health Department. 

Qualifications for dental services:

  1. Patient must live in Harrisonburg or Rockingham County
  2. Have either Medicaid and/or Free Lunch, qualify as “A” income on our sliding scale
  3. Patient must be between the ages of birth and nineteen, and still attending high-school if age 21.  We do NOT treat adults.
  4. We accept Virginia Premier, Optima, Sentara and FAMIS.  With FAMIS the patient must have the $2.00 co-pay plan, NOT the $5.00 co-pay plan.  (Patients having the $5.00 co-pay FAMIS must go to a private dentist, as it is considered private insurance.)  The health department does NOT collect the $2.00 co-pay

If you meet these qualifications, please call 540-574-5210 to make an appointment.  Our office hours are Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.  Please call before coming to make sure we are open, as occasionally we are closed for a holiday or inclement weather.

Waynesboro:

The Waynesboro-Augusta dental team sees children from birth to 21 years of age who have Medicaid or are eligible for free school lunches. The Waynesboro dental clinic, located at the Waynesboro Health Department, sees children from Waynesboro, Staunton and Augusta. Our office hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To make an appointment at the Waynesboro-Augusta office call 540-949-0137, ext. 122.

Lexington:

The Lexington-Rockbridge dental team sees children from birth to 21 years of age who have Medicaid or are eligible for free school lunches. The Lexington-Rockbridge dental clinic, located at the Lexington Rockbridge Health Department, sees children from Lexington, Rockbridge and Buena Vista. Our office hours are Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To make an appointment at the Lexington-Rockbridge office call 540-463-3185, ext. 125.
