The Eastern Shore Health District encompasses the Virginia portion of the Delmarva Peninsula, which is bound by the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay, provides services for two rural counties: Accomack and Northampton.
Most of the districts services are offered on a sliding fee scale, based on a customer’s income. School required immunizations are offered free of charge. The Health Departments also provide information and/or trainings for Community Event functions. The Eastern Shore Health District has a very successful Emergency Preparedness and Response team. This team interacts with other local health care providers, State and County agencies, volunteer groups and private individuals during trainings and actual emergencies. This team also uses the Health Alert Network (HAN) that is used throughout the United States. If an emergency occurs, this team has the ability to send out an alert to all Health District employees in a matter of minutes.The Health District also has two very extensive volunteer programs: “CERT” Citizens Emergency Response Team and “MRC” Medical Reserve Corps. The Environmental Health section of the health department oversees wells and septic systems, conducts risk-based inspections at restaurants, tourist establishments, migrant labor camps and weekend festivals (call for information about festival applications and standards). Environmental health also oversees swimming pool sanitation, beach monitoring and water testing, as well as investigating animal bites in their Rabies Prevention Program, and conducting environmental assessments of lead hazards at the homes of children with elevated blood lead levels.
