Maternity Services: The health department has a public/private partnership with two private obstetricians in Danville and an obstetrical group in Lynchburg. This arrangement provides nearly all of the maternity and obstetrical care for Medicaid and indigent patients in the District. Upon enrollment to maternity services at the health department, the patient chooses one of the participating obstetricians. Routine pre-natal care, case management, postpartum care, newborn evaluations, home visitation and homemaker services are provided by the health department staff. Case consultation, management of high risk pregnancies, and deliveries are performed by the private sector obstetricians. There are childhood classes and a breastfeeding support group. Medicaid eligibility is done by an on-site eligibility worker.
