Flu news in the Richmond City Health District

RCHD leading H1N1 vaccination effort in City of Richmond
The Richmond City Health District is leading the effort to make H1N1 vaccination available to all City of Richmond residents.

The Richmond Health District is working with the City of Richmond, community partners and local health providers to ensure that everyone will have an opportunity to obtain the H1N1 vaccine as it becomes available to the community. Following guidance from the Virginia Department of Health, the vaccine will be provided to identified priority groups and then to all persons who want vaccine protection. The Virginia Department of Health will be the distribution agent for the vaccine and is providing allocations based on population and risk factors to localities throughout the commonwealth. Vaccination of school-age children is a priority as they are among identified at-risk groups for H1N1 virus infection.

What you can do to stay healthy

  • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough and sneeze.
  • Wash your hands often with soap & water (or hand sanitizer) especially after coughing and sneezing.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth; germs spread that way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people

  • Influenza is thought to spread person-to-person mainly through coughing and sneezing by infected people.
  • If you get sick, stay home from work or school, and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
