The Southwest Virginia Medical
Reserve Corps is a cadre
of volunteer health care professionals and community members trained
to respond and assist with public health crises in the 13 counties
and 3 cities that comprise southwestern Virginia. This unit is one of over 700 units that are part of the national Medical Reserve Corps program under the direction of the Office of the U. S. Surgeon General.
In early 2004, the health departments in Cumberland
Plateau,
Lenowisco and
Mount Rogers regions of southwestern
Virginia, were awarded funding from the U. S. Department of Health
and Human Services to establish a regional Medical Reserve Corps
unit.
The Southwest Virginia Medical
Reserve Corps is recruiting
for practicing, retired or otherwise employed medical professionals,
as well as community members with non-medical skills. Physicians,
pharmacists, nurses, epidemiologists and paramedics are just a
sampling of the medical community that are being tapped for service.
Clergy, translators, sign language interpreters, administrative
assistants, volunteer coordinators and all other members of our
communities are also encouraged to consider becoming a part of
our unit.
Membership in the Southwest
Virginia Medical Reserve Corps requires
the following:
A.
Completed application
B. Copy of medical licensure
(if applicable)
C. Volunteer Orientation and Initial Training
D.
Ability to work up to 12 hour shifts, if required
by the emergency
Once the initial orientation and
training is completed, the Corp member will be able to attend
a variety of training opportunities that will be offered
during the year.
Please take a
moment to review our training schedule, read our newsletter and/or
