Virginia EMS Medical Director Training Program

Course Objectives:

Using an adaptation of the nationally-recognized Guide for Preparing Medical Directors course, participants will receive the basic foundation necessary to serve as an EMS Physician in Virginia. The course includes an overview about the Virginia EMS system; EMS Medical Director roles and responsibilities: medical oversight; regional EMS council structure and services; EMS personnel and educational requirements; planning and operational protocols; and patient care audit and evaluation procedures. This course satisfies educational requirements for EMS Medical Directors specified in Regulations governing EMS for Virginia. In the afternoon session of this course there is a focus on current trends and topics of interest to the EMS Medical Director.  A panel of veteran EMS Physicians and EMS Administrators will discuss current issues related to education and training, medical liability, discipline with due process, public health, quality improvement, and others. Open discussion and questions are encouraged.

Target Audience:

This program is open to physicians interested in becoming an EMS Physician (Operational Medical Director or Physician Course Coordinator) in Virginia.   EMS Administrators are invited as well, to foster communication between physicians and the agencies they serve.

Accreditation:

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Area of Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Education through the joint sponsorship of ACEP and VaCEP. The American College of Emergency Physicians is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American College of Emergency Physicians designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s) ™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Approved by the American College of Emergency Physicians for 6.5 hours of ACEP Category I credit.

This program has been approved for 6 hours of AOA Category 2-B credit.

This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 6.25 prescribed credit(s) by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
