Women, Infants and Children (WIC)

The Virginia WIC Program WIC stands for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. The Program provides nutrition education, breast feeding promotion and support, supplemental nutritious foods, counseling at WIC clinics, and screening and referrals to other health, welfare, and social services. The goal of the Program is to improve the health of pregnant women, infants and children (under 5 years) through better nutrition and access to health care. To be eligible for the WIC Program, applicants must meet categorical, residential, income and nutrition risk requirements.

Health Bites is an interactive online nutrition education tool designed to help you and your family enjoy healthier lives. The interactive website provides fun, informative videos on nutrition and ideas on simple and healthy recipes. If you are a WIC participant, the site will allow you to complete modules, to receive nutrition education credit for WIC. Retail Store Management

The VA WIC Program seeks to serve the needs of WIC participants obtaining approved foods through the nearly 800 retail stores and military commissaries it authorizes. For more information click on this link.
To apply to become an authorized store, applicants may go to the RSMS web site or click here for information on submitting a paper application.

Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)

As of October 1, 2010 The United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Mid-Atlantic Regional Office (MARO) passed administration of Virginia's CACFP to the Virginia Department of Health's (VDH) Division of Community Nutrition (DCN). CACFP provides year-round federal funding to eligible child care, family day care, Headstart, at-risk after school care, emergency shelter and adult care centers. This funding is used to provide nutritious meals and snacks to lower income participants in these care programs. Funding for CACFP also helps make these care programs more affordable for families. Nationally, CACFP serves 3.2 million children and 112,000 adults a day.


CACFP is authorized under section 17 of the National School Lunch Act (42 U.S.C. 1766). Program regulations are issued by the USDA under 7 CFR part 226.


Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)

As of October 1, 2010 The United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Mid-Atlantic Regional Office (MARO) passed administration of Virginia's SFSP to the Virginia Department of Health's (VDH) Division of Community Nutrition (DCN). SFSP provides federal funding to eligible sponsor organizations to provide meals and snacks to lower income children during the summer months when school is not in session. SFSP sponsor organizations can be a school, camp, governmental entity, private non-profit organization, or a college participating in the National Youth Sports Program. Nationally, SFSP serves 2 million children a day.


SFSP is authorized under section 13 of the National School Lunch Act (42 U.S.C. 1761). Program regulations are issued by the USDA under 7 CFR part 225.
