The number of providers in a given area is critical criteria for designating areas as shortage areas. If an area is designated, they are qualified to participate in a number of programs that can help them attract providers in their locality, such as scholarships and loan repayment programs. Providers in these areas can also qualify for increased reimbursement for Medicare and Medicaid patients.
Anna uses geographical information systems (GIS) to conduct analysis related to shortage designations and have developed techniques to prioritize areas for designation in times of need.
