Small Rural Hospital Improvement (SHIP) Grant Program


The federal Office of Health Resources and Services Administration's Small Rural Hospital Improvement (SHIP) Grant Program provides funding to small rural hospitals to help them do any or all of the following:

  • Support the development of Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) with the goal of supporting quality improvement and reduction of medical errors, including activities such as education and training in data collection, reporting and benchmarking
  • Improve efforts for data collection activities with Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) with the goal of facilitating reporting to Hospital Compare
  • Implement Prospective Payment System (PPS) and payment bundling with the goal of improving revenue cycle activities, such as updating charge masters or providing staff training for billing and coding
  • Improve transitions of care activities with the goal of reducing hospital readmissions

The Office of Minority Health and Health Equity administers the SHIP Grant Program. Hospitals that meet the following requirements are eligible to participate in the SHIP Grant Program:

General acute care hospitals

  • with fewer than 49 eligible beds AND
  • that are located outside a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) OR
  • located in a rural census tract

Pioneer Community Hospital of Patrick County
Rappahannock General Hospital
Riverside Tappahannock Hospital
Russell County Medical Center
Shenandoah Memorial Hospital
Smyth County Community Hospital
Southampton Memorial Hospital
Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center
Southside Community Hospital
Warren Memorial Hospital
Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital
Wythe County Community Hospital
