About the Virginia Department of Health

On the job

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is the leader of Virginia’s public health system. For more than 100 years, VDH has advanced the health of all Virginians. Today, VDH does this from a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts across Virginia.

Protecting health

The Virginia Department of Health has a very important responsibility.

Every day VDH works to protect the health of Virginia’s citizens and communities.

Protecting our health includes activities such as

  • Restaurant inspections
  • Water testing and safety
  • Emergency shelters
  • Flu shots
  • Immunizations
  • Emergency preparedness

and much more.

Promoting Health

But the Virginia Department of Health also promotes health.

Helping families live, work and play in healthier ways is an important part of public health too.

To do so, VDH conducts health education and promotion in many different ways and places. A few of these topics and activities include

  • Nutrition services/counseling (including the WIC program for women, infants and children)
  • Cancer/cancer screening
  • Infant mortality
  • Physical activity/obesity
  • Child care health and safety
  • Chronic diseases
  • Injury, violence and suicide prevention.

A pro-active approach

The Virginia Department of health takes a proactive approach to these and all public health efforts in Virginia. Whether

  • providing direct services
  • tracking and addressing health threats
  • educating Virginia citizens about health and wellness or
  • working with the state’s health care providers

the Virginia Department of Health is at the forefront of Virginia’s public health efforts.

Supporting the health of all Virginians is an enormous responsibility. Especially since the health of Virginia’s citizens and communities is essential to every aspect of life in the Commonwealth-including economic, educational and quality of life.

But the Virginia Department of Health is more than prepared for the task. VDH also has a long and successful track record with just such efforts. And it adds to that record every day.

Virginia’s Department of Health is one of the nation’s most active, engaged, committed and successful public health institutions. As such VDH will continue to meet its priorities and advance the health of Virginians through this new century and beyond.
