The Office of EMS, Division of Emergency Operations has received numerous requests for clarification regarding the transition from the S.T.A.R.T. Triage system to the S.A.L.T. Triage system. While we recognize the movement towards a national triage system, we have chosen to delay transition until the completion of review of the national standard and education curriculum.
Remember that S.T.A.R.T. is the recognized Virginia standard in the Rules and Regulations, and as such we remind you that it is expected that agencies continue to utilize this triage standard until the Office of EMS has made the transition to S.A.L.T. When the federal government has completed their review and released the final training documents related to S.A.L.T. triage, the Office of EMS will begin transitioning to the federal triage system.
Keep in mind that a transition to triage will include a change in regulations, a change in training programs, and a change in the approved Virginia Triage Tag. Additionally it will require the roll out of new instructor material for Mass Casualty Incident Management Module I and II.
Again, we stress the importance of maintaining your current S.T.A.R.T. triage programs and utilizing the current Virginia approved triage tag. As we begin the process of transition we are going to communicate the changes with providers and agencies to ensure they are in compliance.
