Chinese Drywall

ChinesedrywallDuring the housing boom in the mid 2000’s, home builders and suppliers sought construction material from outside the United States to keep up with a growing demand for new building materials. In 2008, some of the drywall imported from China was identified as emitting sulfur gases in newly constructed homes in Florida. Homeowners have reported that the drywall gases cause metal corrosion and adverse health effects. The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) first identified a home built in Virginia with Chinese Drywall in early 2009. Since that time, VDH has worked with other state and federal agencies to investigate contaminated drywall and reported health effects.
