The purpose of this presentation is to explain the biology of mosquitoes, the transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) by mosquitoes, and some of the procedures that are commonly used for mosquito surveillance and control. The goal of the presentation is to illustrate that mosquito control is a complex topic requiring a complete understanding of the biology and behavior of the target mosquito species, knowledge of species are present in the local environment, and knowledge of the various methods that might be selected and applied to control each of the target species. This presentation will allow the layman to understand that mosquito control is complex issue that cannot be solved simply by driving an insecticide fogging truck around the town once a week. This presentation will be particularly useful to public officials that are contemplating the establishment of mosquito control programs.

The first 21 slides cover the basic aspects of mosquito biology and behavior, discuss the factors involved in the transmission of WNV by mosquitoes, and briefly cover the behavior of important WNV vector species found in Virginia.
Slides 22 through 31 (10 slides) cover the why’s and how’s of mosquito surveillance and explain why good surveillance is so important for good control.
Slides 32 through 57 (26 slides) discuss the pros and cons of the most widely used mosquito control tactics and the insecticide formulations commonly used to control mosquitoes.
