Virginia AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP)

ADAP provides medications for low-income, uninsured individuals with HIV/AIDS.  Due to unprecedented enrollment and increased treatment costs, ADAP is closed to new enrollment except for pregnant women, children 18 years old or younger, and people receiving treatment for an active opportunistic infection.  In addition, approximately 760 clients are currently transitioning out of ADAP and into other assistance programs.  To ensure a continuous source of medication is provided, a team of specially trained staff will help patients enroll into other programs. Additionally, the VDH is collaborating closely with patients’ physicians so that the integrity of patients’ treatment plan is maintained.

Virginia ADAP will continue to serve more than three thousand clients who will remain in the program. No interruption in care will occur for any ADAP clients.  ADAP is one of several HIV/AIDS medication resources of its kind.  Other like sources includes Medicaid, patient assistance programs and private insurance companies.

Clinical Support and Policy Development

In 1996, an ADAP Advisory Committee was created. The committee is comprised of HIV/AIDS medical providers, a pharmacist, and consumers. The committee advises VDH on changes to the formulary, changes in eligibility criteria, adherence issues, and educational concerns. The committee reviews data on ADAP utilization and assess budgetary implications of trends and program changes.
