Controlled Substances - Inventory Control

A perpetual inventory of all bulk controlled substances (Schedules II-V) must be maintained by all local health departments. This inventory record must reflect any bulk schedule II-V controlled substance on hand at any time. The record should include the date of receipt (date and amount) of new inventory and any disposition (date and amount) of existing stock.

This does not apply to licensed pharmacies as they must follow inventory requirements established by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.

Questions concerning the storage and handling of prescription and non-prescription drugs should be directed to the Department's Director of Pharmacy Services.
