The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
release the first national and local estimates
of new HIV infections

Released - August 4,2008

According to the CDC, in 2006, an estimated 56,300 people contracted HIV in the United States.

The CDC also estimates 1,200 Virginians contracted HIV in 2006.

These new incidence estimates are based on direct measurements of new HIV infections and provide the clearest picture to date of incidence (the number of new HIV infections in a given year).

New technology allows CDC to identify if an infection has been acquired "recently", defined as less than six months time, or "long-term", meaning the person was infected greater than six months time. Virginia was one of the 22 states whose 2006 data were used in calculating the national estimate. Virginia will use these estimations to focus HIV prevention efforts more effectively and allocate resources to the specific populations most impacted by HIV.

Stay Tuned!

Virginia will be receiving technical guidance from the CDC that will use the same statistical model at the state level to produce more detailed data in the coming weeks.
