FOR PROVIDERS
VIIS Participation
VIIS Participation
Are fees associated with participation in VIIS?
- No fees are involved with the use of the VIIS software.
- A connection to the internet (preferably not modem) as well as some software (Adobe Reader) is required
Is VIIS participation by the provider voluntary?
- Health care professional participation in VIIS is entirely voluntary.
- The legislation for VIIS allows a parent to opt out of sharing their child’s immunization record with anyone other than their primary care provider
- This means that the provider still enters immunization information into VIIS as it serves as the patient’s record
- The application allows you to flag the client, so that the information is viewed ONLY by you.
Do all children have to participate in VIIS?
- VIIS is an opt out registry, which means that every Virginia citizen at birth is enrolled in VIIS
- At the time the client visits your office, you need to give the parent/guardian the opportunity to opt-out of VIIS for their child
- Instead of opting-out, the parent or guardian may elect for their child to remain in VIIS, but not to have their child’s immunizations shared with other providers.
What do I do if someone wants to opt-out of VIIS?
- If the patient does opt-out, the immunization data is still recorded in VIIS, but the client record is flagged by you, so that the information is only viewed by you.
- When another provider searches for that client, s/he will get a pop-up that states to contact you for immunization information
- By the Code of Virginia you can fax the immunization information to that provider without parental permission
- If that child elects later to participate in VIIS, you can simply remove the flag and all of the child’s immunization data that you entered will be viewed by all providers
What training can I expect?
- VIIS web-based training is available on this website
- The application contains a user manual that is also on this website.
- Hands-on training is available for all participants
