Can I be held liable for information that I send/receive from VIIS?

  • No, VIIS legislation allows for the provider ” to be immune from civil liability in connection therewith unless such person acted with gross negligence or malicious intent”

Does the medical community support VIIS?

Yes. Numerous associations have played a role in developing VIIS legislation, such as:

  • Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics,
  • Medical Society of Virginia,
  • Virginia  Association of Health Plans,
  • Richmond Pediatric Society,
  • Virginia Nurses Association,
  • Family Health Connection of Prince William County,
  • Voices for Virginia’s Children,
  • Virginia Pharmaceutical Association,
  • Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association,
  • Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants,
  • Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners,
  • Medical Society of Northern Virginia
  • Bon Secours Richmond Health System.

Legislation for the establishment and existence of VIIS was promoted by the Medical Community.  House Bill - 2519  (Delegate John O’Bannon, sponsor) and Senate Bill –  1132 (Senator Janet Howell, sponsor) amend Section 32.1-46 of the Code of Virginia to authorize establishment of a statewide immunization information system (VIIS)

Do other states have immunization registries?

  • The Centers for Disease Control has developed guidelines and requirements that will assure all states with the ability to exchange information
  • Electronic medical records systems for immunization data are being developed or are already operational in all 50 states.
  • Currently 48% of all children in the US are enrolled in registries.
