The Commonwealth of Virginia offers incentive programs that will repay outstanding medical education debt in exchange for medical service in a medically underserved area. The purpose of the Loan Repayment Programs is to increase access in Virginia's underserved areas to primary care services. All information requested is used to evaluate candidate qualifications and suitability to participate in the program.

The application period for the loan repayment program has ended. Minimum funding is available and the office is preparing to make awards by the end of June.

The Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr), Division of State, Community and Public Health, Virginia State Loan Repayment Program is funded through both federal and state dollars. This program requires that the practice location be in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). This program does not offer additional funds to cover increased income taxes. Applications are accepted from January 1 until May 1 of each year.
The Virginia Loan Repayment Program is fully funded by Virginia dollars. This program allows repayment for service done in either Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) or in Virginia Medically Underserved Areas, designated by the state. This program does not offer additional funds to cover increased income taxes. Applications are accepted from January 1 until May 1 of each year.
