The Commonwealth of Virginia offers incentive programs that will repay outstanding medical education debt in exchange for medical service in a medically underserved area. The purpose of the Loan Repayment Programs is to increase access in Virginia's underserved areas to primary care services. All information requested is used to evaluate candidate qualifications and suitability to participate in the program.
The VDH, Office of Minority Health and Public Health Policy is proud to announce that 22 new awards were made this year to primary care health practitioners serving all across the Commonwealth.

The application deadline has passed for the Loan Repayment Program. Recipients will be notified by June 15. Priority is given to current recipients that are eligible for renewals. Remaining funds will go towards new awards.
The Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr), Division of State, Community and Public Health, Virginia State Loan Repayment Program is funded through both federal and state dollars. This program requires that the practice location be in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). This program does not offer additional funds to cover increased income taxes. Applications are accepted from January 1 until May 1 of each year.
The Virginia Loan Repayment Program is fully funded by Virginia dollars. This program allows repayment for service done in either Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) or in Virginia Medically Underserved Areas, designated by the state. This program does not offer additional funds to cover increased income taxes. Applications are accepted from January 1 until May 1 of each year.
The NHSC Loan Repayment program is fully funded by federal dollars. This program requires that the practice location be in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). In addition to the loan repayment funds, this program offers an additional 39% of that amount to cover income taxes.
The Division of Dental Health offers the Virginia Dental Loan Repayment Program.
The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) offers educational loan repayment to qualified applicants through the Loan Repayment Program for Health Disparities Research (HDR-LRP).
