Susan L. Triggs, PhD, MPH, RN

Susan L. Triggs serves as the Rural Health Specialist and supports the Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE), Division of Primary Care & Rural Health with efforts to promote health equity as it relates to rural areas in Virginia. Ms. Triggs provides the day-to-day oversight and coordination of the OMHHE’s Federal Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Grant and the Small Rural Hospital Improvement Program Grant and also assists in coordinating and promoting Virginia’s State Rural Health Plan. She works with rural community partners around the following areas: access, quality, workforce, social determinants of health, health equity, identification, analysis, and tracking of related policies and alternatives to policies, legislation and regulations that will address rural health needs in Virginia and provides on-going basis consultation, technical assistance, and training about model programs, best practices, emerging and promising approaches in health care to local health departments, rural health clinics, community health centers, and other rural health care providers and stakeholders to support rural health initiatives in Virginia.

Ms. Triggs has worked with the Virginia Department of Health serving rural and urban Virginians for almost 10 years. Ms. Triggs has worked with the OMHHE as a Health Equity Specialist before assuming her current position. Prior to coming to the OMHHE, she worked with the Peninsula Health District as a Public Health Nurse Senior.
