Immunizations: Vaccine Preventable Diseases

Immunizations are one of the leading reasons for people living longer. Immunizations prevent many diseases that cause illnesses and sometimes death. During our grand-parents and great grand-parents time, many, many adults died from flu and pneumonia. Children were crippled from polio and tetanus, suffered major organ damage from measles and hepatitis, and died from diphtheria and pertussis. We forget that these illnesses still exists since the vaccines prevent these childhood diseases. If we fail to keep our children vaccinated, these illnesses will appear again.

To be protected against these diseases, children need the following immunizations:

Childhood Immunization Schedule

If your child has missed any immunizations, take them to your doctor or Health Department as soon as possible to get them caught up and protected.

Adolescents and adults need immunizations also. A tetanus booster is needed every 10 years unless you get a “dirty” wound. A tetanus booster can be given after 5 years if a wound occurs. Everyone should get the flu vaccine each year. The vaccine is changed each year to match the type of flu expected to occur. Protection from adult Pneumonia vaccine only requires one to two doses. If you receive your first dose before age 65, then you should receive another dose after you turn 65 years of age. Additional doses are not needed unless your doctor advises you to have more.

Adolescents should also consider Meningococcal vaccine and Hepatitis B vaccine if they did not have it as a child. Hepatitis A is now being recommended by Centers of Disease Control for children. Call your doctor or Health Department to discuss these vaccines.

Are our vaccines safe? They certainly are! Vaccines in the United States go through rigorous testing and approval processes. If there is evidence of problems with a vaccine, it is investigated extensively. Any vaccine found to be unsafe is taken off the market.

Each of our counties has a walk-in clinic for immunization with NO appointment needed. For days and time of clinics or for more information, call your local Health Department and speak with the Public Health Nurse.

Please bring your child's immunization record to each visit and always keep a copy of the record. You will need it when your child attends camp, enters or changes school, goes to college, enters the military, etc.
