The Chesapeake Medical Reserve Corps (CMRC) Program coordinates volunteer opportunities for practicing and retired physicians, nurses, epidemiologists and other health professionals as well as non-medical citizens interested in health issues. CMRC volunteers are trained to address their community's ongoing public health needs and help their community during large-scale emergency situations.
The mission of the CMRC is to organize, train, and deploy local medical, health and community volunteers to support and/or supplement medical and public health response efforts in the city of Chesapeake. Volunteers support routine health activities to keep current with public health functions in preparation for disaster needs.
On October 17, 2015, Chesapeake MRC (CMRC) volunteers served with Health Department staff to administer 350 flu shots to the public. This clinic, the first drive-thru vaccination operation for Chesapeake Health Department, was a huge success with many positive comments from those receiving their vaccine. The lessons learned from this event will be used in planning for future community events and responding to urgent public health issues. Thank you CMRC volunteers!
