(DANVILLE, Va.) – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) now offers flu shots at local health departments. VDH accepts all forms of insurance and can make arrangements for people who are not insured or are underinsured, at no out-of-pocket cost.
VDH recommends flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age or older. The vaccine is the best way to protect those you love from illness caused by the flu and its consequences. It is widely and conveniently available, so don’t miss the opportunity to get vaccinated.
Flu shots are available at the Danville Health Department and the Pittsylvania County Health Department Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.
To prevent the spread of the flu, practice the following precautions:
- Get the flu vaccine – it is the single best way to prevent the flu and to protect yourself, your neighbors, and your loved ones;
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub;
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way;
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people;
- Practice good health habits. Get plenty of sleep and exercise, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat healthy foods;
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If a tissue is not available, sneeze or cough into your sleeve;
- If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine; and
- Use antiviral drugs if your doctor recommends them.
