May 19 – 25 is EMS Week in Virginia

(Richmond, Va.) Day in and day out, Virginia’s EMS providers stand ready to respond to citizens in need, providing pre-hospital care to the sick or wounded. Last year alone, EMS providers responded to over 1.2 million calls for help in the commonwealth. That’s approximately 3,327 incidents per day.
As proclaimed by Governor Bob McDonnell, May 19 – 25, 2013, is observed as EMS Week in Virginia and celebrates emergency medical service responders’ heroic efforts and commitment to saving lives. EMS for Children Day is May 22 and raises awareness of pediatric health and safety.
“The citizens of Virginia rely on round the clock emergency response and care, which is provided by over 650 affiliated EMS agencies across the state,” said State Health Commissioner Cynthia C. Romero, MD, FAAFP. “Not only do we appreciate Virginia EMS providers’ commitment to the health and safety of the Commonwealth’s communities and families, but we thank them for their continued dedication and service to the EMS system.”
“Every day more than 36,000 certified EMS providers deliver quality pre-hospital care, from the time a call is received by the 911 center to the time a patient arrives at the hospital,” said Gary Brown, Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services director. “EMS Week is a great time to recognize the hard work and dedication of these providers.”
During this week, EMS agencies across the state will host community-focused activities including blood pressure screenings, car seat safety checks, health seminars and more. Participants can take part in family-friendly events and learn about the agencies that serve their neighborhood.
To honor our state’s fallen fire and EMS personnel, Governor McDonnell also has proclaimed Fire and EMS Memorial Week, June 2 – 8, 2013. This inaugural event, in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Fire Programs Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service, will honor fire and EMS providers who died in the line of duty and recognize those who risk their lives daily to serve and protect the people. The Annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service will be held June 1 at 12 p.m. at the Richmond International Raceway.
