Virginia Certification Program Outlines

This page was designed to provide instructors/coordinators with one-stop shopping for information and documentation pertaining to the new initial certification program layouts.

The program outlines listed below constitute Virginia’s transition from the USDOT’s National Standard Curriculum to the new National EMS Scope of Practice model and the Virginia Emergency Medical Services Education Standards (VEMSES). 

Virginia EMS Education Standard Certification Programs

Virginia developed the Virginia EMS Education Standards (VEMSES) based primarily on the National EMS Education Standards (NEMSES).  All instruction of initial EMS certification programs, excepting EMT-Enhanced, will transition to the VEMSES by July 1, 2012.

Competency-based EMT Program

Individuals, agencies or training centers who choose to become accredited at the EMT level will follow a new state approved, competency-based EMT program.  For more information on the Competency-based EMT program, please click here.
