Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)

In 2004, Virginia WIC implemented the Loving Support Through Peer Counseling, Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program. Loving Support© is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Services and was developed by Best Start, Inc. This program aims to enhance the continuity of WIC's breastfeeding promotion efforts by offering mother-to-mother breastfeeding support.

Loving Support Makes a Difference in Virginia

The Virginia WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program strives to increase the incidence and duration of breastfeeding exclusively within the WIC population. Peer counseling combined with the on-going breastfeeding promotion efforts within local WIC agencies throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia has had a dramatic impact on breastfeeding rates among WIC participants. Most significantly, WIC is providing assistance to participants in the most vulnerable locations where it has been challenging in the past to achieve higher breastfeeding duration rates.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselors are women who have had a personal breastfeeding experience and who are or have been WIC participants themselves. They have been carefully selected and are required to complete the Loving Support© Peer Counselor Training which covers basic breastfeeding techniques and counseling skills. They have a desire to help other WIC mothers achieve their personal breastfeeding goals. Breastfeeding Peer Counselors provide breastfeeding information, encouragement, and support both prenatally and throughout the mother's breastfeeding experience. WIC breastfeeding staff work in partnership with private physicians, local hospitals, and community agencies to provide each mother based on her own unique needs with counseling, education, referrals, and resources. The Peer Counselors are known for their compassionate support, dedication, and desire to help breastfeeding families.
