When Should I Be Tested For Diabetes?
Anyone aged 45 years or older should consider getting tested for type 2 diabetes, especially if you are overweight. If you are younger than 45, but are overweight and have one or more additional risk factors listed below, you should consider testing.

  • Over 45 years of age
  • Overweight (See if your are overweight)
  • Physically inactive
  • Have a parent or sibling with diabetes
  • Are African American, Hispanic/Latino or American Indian
  • Had diabetes during pregnancy or had a baby who weighed over 9 pounds at birth

  • Extreme thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Frequent infections
  • Cuts that are slow to heal
  • Extreme fatigue

To Reduce Your Chances of Getting Type 2 Diabetes:

  • Obtain/maintain a healthy weight.
  • Be active every day -walk, cycle, garden, dance, etc.
  • Eat a variety of foods that are low in fat, cholesterol and salt.
