Healthy Eating and Active Living Program - An Obesity and Chronic Disease Prevention Initiative

The goal of the Healthy Eating and Active Living Program is to prevent obesity and other chronic diseases by:
1) providing Virginians with information, tools and resources for promoting healthy eating and access to proper nutrition options; and 2) encouraging and reinforcing active lifestyles and behaviors. The program promotes evidence-based strategies, systems and environmental changes and develops partnerships with schools, communities and the medical community to coordinate state-wide efforts and resources.

Healthy eating and active living are behaviors that improve overall health as well as prevent and control various chronic diseases. Healthy eating habits can decrease risk of diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, hypertension, and certain types of cancers, as well as prevent individuals from being overweight or obese. Regular physical activity also reduces the risk for many diseases, helps control weight, and strengthens muscles, bones and joints. A combination of healthy eating and active living can help people achieve their optimal lifespan with the best possible quality of health in every stage of life.
