Loan Repayment Programs

Virginia Department of Health

The Virginia Department of Health administers the following loan repayment programs for health care professionals. All programs offer loan repayment of up to $25,000 a year for a minimum two-year commitment.

Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr), Division of State, Community and Public Health, Virginia State Loan Repayment Program (VA-SLRP)

The Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr), Division of State, Community and Public Health, Virginia State Loan Repayment Program is funded through both federal and state dollars. This program requires that the practice location be in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). This program does not offer additional funds to cover increased income taxes.

Virginia Loan Repayment Program

The Virginia Loan Repayment Program is fully funded by Virginia dollars. This program allows repayment for service done in either Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) or in Virginia Medically Underserved Areas, designated by the state. This program does not offer additional funds to cover increased income taxes.

Additional Loan Repayment Programs

The following loan repayment programs are also available for practitioners who wish to practice in Virginia:

National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program

The NHSC Loan Repayment program is fully funded by federal dollars. This program requires that the practice location be in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). In addition to the loan repayment funds, this program offers an additional 39% of that amount to cover income taxes.

National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities

The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) offers educational loan repayment to qualified applicants through the Loan Repayment Program for Health Disparities Research (HDR-LRP).

Virginia Dental Loan Repayment Program

The Division of Dental Health offers the Virginia Dental Loan Repayment Program.
