Internship Opportunities


INTERNSHIP INFORMATION:

Thank you for your interest in the Thomas Jefferson Health District. The Thomas Jefferson Health District provides public health services to the residents of the City of Charlottesville, and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson.

Please note internships are only for individuals currently enrolled in an academic program. If you are not enrolled in an academic program, but would like to volunteer with the TJHD please visit: http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/mrc/tjmrc/

HOW TO APPLY:

Please review each position to find those in which you are most interested in and take note of the Job ID for use in the application.

We also offer the opportunity for students to design their own internship. If you have a project that would be applicable to the TJHD we want to hear about it! Within the application you will propose a project in place of an open internship position, if we like your idea and wish to move forward with it we will help you develop and implement your research and project. If you wish to do this, please prepare the following in advance to filling out the application, so that it may be included.

  • A brief description of your project, include title, methods, expected/possible outcome(s). (500-word maximum)
  • Expected length of time the project will take.
  • Why would you like to conduct your project with us; Why is the TJHD the best place for your project?
  • Expected materials/resources the project will need.

ALL applicants will be required to submit the following documents for applications to be considered complete:

  • Up to date resume/CV
  • References
  • Up to date unofficial Academic Transcript
  • Professional writing sample, something to use would include an excerpt from a previously written academic or professional work.

All applicants are limited in applying to no more than 3 open internships per semester. Any additional applications received in excess to the 3 submitted will be discarded. A project proposal is considered 1 of these 3 submitted internship positions; students may only offer 1 project proposal.


AVAILABLE INTERNSHIPS:

1.) Immunization Data Survey Lead & Communications Specialist:

The successful candidate will serve as the Immunization Data Survey lead and is responsible for conducting TJHD’s annual CoCASA Survey of Immunization Records. The position works with selected day care, head starts, and elementary schools to collect randomly selected, de-identified immunization records to determine the percentage of children adequately immunized prior to entering elementary school. This project should be completed within 60 hours. In addition, the selected candidate will serve as a Communications Specialist to provide support to the TJHD Communications and Public Relations Lead. The individual will assist in redesigning  and updating TJHD’s website content and developing a variety of communications materials for public outreach. This part of the internship will begin after the CoCASA Survey is completed.

2.) Communicable Disease Investigation Intern:

The successful candidate will serve as a Communicable Disease Investigation Intern and is responsible for the follow up of positive lab reports for reportable diseases. They will also confirm case status according to National Notifiable Conditions case definitions, investigate to determine source of infection, determine need for public health actions as per VDH guidelines, communicate with medical providers and patients by phone, provision of recommended control measure information and follow up per VDH guidelines, and report findings to colleagues.
