Birth Certificates, Death Certificates, Marriage License, Divorce Decrees

What

Apply for copies of birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates from the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Office of Vital Records.

Death certificates can be issued regardless of the location of death at any local health department vital records office within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our health departments keep records up to 5 years and can provide copies of certificates on file. For all other death certificates, apply to the VDH Office of Vital Records.

The Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department and Louisa County Health Department can issue marriage, birth, and divorce records. Beginning December 11, 2017, health departments in Fluvanna, Greene, and Nelson counties will issue marriage, birth, and divorce records.

Who
Death certificates will only be given to the following:

  • Immediate family (mother/father, adult sister/brother, husband/wife, adult child)
  • Court-appointed guardian
  • Funeral Director
  • Legal representative of the deceased

All others need to prove a direct and tangible interest in order to obtain a death certificate.
