VDH Working to Continue the Downward Trend of Drug Overdoses, as it Observes International Overdose Awareness Day

The global community observes International Overdose Awareness Day every year on August 31. On this day and every day, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) works to help Virginians at risk for drug overdose. Drug overdose is the leading cause of unnatural (injury-related) death among all Virginians. This public health crisis affects all communities across the state.

Since 2021, we have seen a decrease in the number of people dying due to drug overdose. Preliminary numbers for drug overdose deaths among Virginians show a 43 percent decrease in 2024 compared to 2023. We are encouraged by this decrease but continue to improve services to help Virginians at risk for drug overdose.

The VDH Overdose Prevention page provides a wide range of information.

  • How do I stay safe while struggling with drug use?
  • How can I test for fentanyl?
  • What are the signs of overdose?
  • What is naloxone and where can I get it?
  • What can I do in case of an overdose?
  • Where can I get support?

VDH offers a variety of programs, services, and resources to save lives. We support Comprehensive Harm Reduction (CHR) programs across the state. CHR is a set of public health services that prevent drug overdose and other infections, like HIV and hepatitis C. This includes distributing naloxone, a medication that can help stop an opioid overdose. We also partner with organizations and health systems to support healthcare provider education and other prevention efforts.

To help identify which Virginia communities may need extra support, we’ve created a needs assessment tool. The tool uses drug overdose-related data to identify these communities. It also helps us customize programs and strategies.
