The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the <\/span>Chesterfield <\/span>Health District are responding to an outbreak of monkeypox that has spread across several countries that don\u2019t normally report monkeypox, including the United States. Vaccination<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

At this time, widespread vaccination against Monkeypox is not recommended or necessary for most people.  <\/span>However, Chesterfield Health District has developed an<\/b> interest form for the Monkeypox vaccine<\/b><\/a>. <\/b>Vaccine supply is currently limited and vaccination <\/b>is not guaranteed by completing the form.<\/b> This list will be used to administer vaccines in the future, depending on risk factors and the available supply. <\/span><\/p>\n

What is Monkeypox? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Monkeypox is a rare contagious rash illness caused by the monkeypox virus. The virus is in the same family of viruses as the virus that causes smallpox. Monkeypox causes milder illness than smallpox, but some symptoms can be severe. The monkeypox virus can spread from animals to people and from person to person.<\/p>\n

Who is at Risk? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The general public is at a low risk. <\/strong>However, like any illness, anyone is able to contract the Monkeypox virus. <\/span><\/p>\n

How is it Spread? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Monkeypox can be spread through<\/span> close contact with an infected person. Close contact includes touching skin lesions, bodily fluids, or clothing or linen that have been used by an infected person, prolonged face-to-face contact with an infected person. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Monkeypox virus is <\/span>spreading mostly through close, intimate contact<\/span><\/a>, which includes sexual activty, with someone who has Monkeypox. <\/span><\/p>\n

What are the Signs and Symptoms? <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Symptoms usually start within 3 weeks of exposure to the virus. The illness caused by Monkeypox typically lasts for 2-4 weeks. <\/span><\/p>\n
