Following are some related data along with steps you can take to help prevent and reduce illness among your patients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Respiratory Syncytial Virus<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emergency department (ED) and urgent care (UC) visits with diagnosed Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) have quadrupled and have been rapidly increasing in Virginia\u2019s syndromic surveillance system since early September. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1429\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2022\/10\/figure1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2022\/10\/figure1.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2022\/10\/figure1-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Figure 1: ED and urgent care visits that include RSV in the discharge diagnosis. Syndromic surveillance data limitations should be considered when interpreting these data.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recommended Actions: Review diagnosis and treatment information for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rsv\/clinical\/index.html#prophylaxis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">RSV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Palivizumab is a monoclonal antibody recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for certain high-risk individuals.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure you are familiar with AAP\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/134\/2\/415\/33013\/Updated-Guidance-for-Palivizumab-Prophylaxis-Among?autologincheck=redirected?nfToken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">RSV prophylaxis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> guidance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Influenza<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ED and UC visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) are increasing. During the week ending October 15, 2022 the percent of ILI visits was higher than the same week during each of the past five years. This may signal an early start to the flu season and VDH will closely monitor outbreak and laboratory data to better understand this. Among 0-4 year olds, 14.1% of all ED and UC visits during October 9-15 were for ILI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Virginia Immunization Information System data indicate that flu vaccination uptake between July 1 and October 16 of this year is lower, especially in pediatric populations, than the same time periods during the previous three years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2022\/10\/Figure2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1427\" height=\"864\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2022\/10\/Figure2.png 1427w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2022\/10\/Figure2-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2022\/10\/Figure2-1024x620.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2022\/10\/Figure2-768x465.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1427px) 100vw, 1427px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the CDC, racial and ethnic disparities in influenza-associated hospitalizations were consistently observed among Black, AI\/AN, and Hispanic adults compared with White adults in the U.S., with hospitalization rates an average of 1.2 to 1.8 times those in White adults during the past 13 seasons. The reasons for these disparities are likely multifactorial, including lower influenza vaccination coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recommended Actions:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recommend flu vaccine to your patients.\u00a0 Your strong flu vaccine recommendation is one of the most important factors in patients accepting the vaccine.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the 2022-2023 season, there are three flu vaccines that are preferentially recommended for people 65 years and older.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additional <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/rr\/rr7101a1.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recommendations from ACIP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the 2022-2023 flu season were published August 26, 2022.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Offer flu and COVID-19 vaccines at the same visit, if eligible and the timing coincides.\u00a0 Getting both vaccines at the same visit increases the chance that a person will be up-to-date with their vaccinations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remind patients to stay home when they are sick and to practice good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Monitor flu activity on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/epidemiology\/influenza-flu-in-virginia\/influenza-surveillance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">VDH website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thank you for providing care to your patients and for your partnership with public health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sincerely,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Colin M.
