Source: Emergency Department (ED) and urgent care (UC) visits from VDH ESSENCE (Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics).
VDH collects and analyzes health data from participating EDs and UCs in Virginia. All non-federal acute care hospitals and free-standing emergency care centers report ED visit data to VDH. Urgent care reporting varies throughout the state. Data are for clinical care of patients in healthcare settings. Public health surveillance is a secondary use. When interpreting trends, please consider syndromic surveillance data limitations.
Case Definitions:
Diagnosed COVID-19: COVID visits are identified using the following discharge diagnosis codes: ICD-10 diagnosis codes: J12.82, Pneumonia due to coronavirus disease 2019; U07.1, COVID-19. SNOMED diagnosis codes: 840539006, Disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2; 840544004, Suspected disease caused by severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2; 840533007, Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2
COVID-Like Illness (CLI): CLI visits are identified using key terms in the chief complaint (reason for visit) and discharge diagnosis codes.
Visits for CLI include those with: Fever + respiratory complaint (e.g., fever with cough, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing); Loss of taste or smell; Coronavirus or severe respiratory diagnosis; COVID-19 as the reason for visit (e.g., COVID-19 screening, exposure, or testing). CLI visits do NOT include COVID-19 vaccination visits or visits with an influenza diagnosis. These data do not represent confirmed cases of COVID-19, but they can assist with understanding the burden on healthcare systems and the community. Geography: VDH assigns region and health district using the patient’s residential zip code. The dashboard includes ED and urgent care visit data for Virginia residents only. Visits from out of state residents are excluded. Use the VDH Health District Reference Guide for a list of cities and counties in each region and health district.
Suppression: Diagnosed COVID-19 visit counts of 1 to 4 and rates with numerators of 1 to 4 have been suppressed to maintain confidentiality. Suppressed statistics are indicated with an asterisk (*).
