VDH routinely performs ongoing and comprehensive quality assurance on COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths reported on its COVID-19 data dashboards. Negative numbers in case counts for a locality may be observed as quality assurance steps are completed. More information on these quality assurance steps is available here.

The Virginia Department of Health is working with the federal government to provide COVID-19 testing for every person arriving in Virginia from Afghanistan. Starting August 17, 2021, all COVID-19 test results (both positive and negative) from this effort will be reported in Loudoun County. This may increase the number of COVID-19 cases reported in Loudoun County for the near future. This will also increase the number of test results assigned to Loudoun County and may impact the percent positivity.

COVID-19 vaccines are being offered to all eligible repatriated citizens and others newly arriving from Afghanistan.

VDH strives to provide accurate and timely data to the public while performing ongoing and comprehensive data quality assurance. Recent updates on reporting COVID-19 death data are presented here:
  • The increase in deaths reported from February-March 2021 was due to processing of 2021 death certificates after the post-holiday surge of COVID-19 cases. To view COVID-19 deaths by date of death, go to the Cases dashboard.
  • In the process of conducting quality assurance, 99 deaths (<1%) were identified as not being COVID-19 related according to the Virginia Case Definition for COVID-19 Associated Mortality and were reclassified on March 19, resulting in a net decrease of deaths (more COVID-19 deaths were removed than added).
