COVID-19 in Virginia: PCR Test Positivity Rates

Per CMS memo issued in August 2020, nursing homes are required to conduct testing of residents and staff.  Requirements include testing staff on a prescribed frequency based on the COVID-19 positivity rate for the county in which the nursing home is located.  To determine frequency of staff testing, CMS and OLC are allowing nursing homes to use county positivity data posted to the CMS website, or the VDH locality data provided below.  Facilities must document the data source they are using, including the date and time they pull the data, and consistently use the same source and most current data available.  A public use dataset is available to download from the Virginia Open Data Portal, which will allow facilities to save a copy of the VDH data.

VDH plans to update positivity rates by locality every Monday. Per the CMS memo, facilities should adjust the frequency of routine staff testing every two weeks, unless the county positivity rate increases to a higher level of activity, at which point the facility should immediately increase testing frequency.

The data below includes the total number of COVID-19 PCR testing encounters, total positive PCR tests, and the PCR percent positivity for each locality in Virginia by the two most recent 14-day periods based on the lab report date.  These data are not exclusive to nursing homes and can be utilized by any setting type.
