      What is stigma?1<\/sup><\/h1><\/h3>\n
      \n\t

      The word\u00a0stigma<\/em> is used to describe a set of negative beliefs or feelings that society, or a group of people can have about something or someone.\u00a0 These beliefs are often unfair.<\/p>\n

      Substance use disorders are treatable medical conditions.\u00a0 They are also chronic.\u00a0 This means that they can last for a long time or reoccur.<\/p>\n

      Studies have shown that people with substance use disorders facing discrimination and stigma have their health and well-being negatively impacted in numerous ways.\u00a0 People who use drugs that do not suffer from a substance use disorder can also be affected by stigma.<\/p>\n

      There are safe, effective, and lifesaving tools available to help people struggling with substance use.\u00a0 However, stigma can prevent people who need help from seeking care or help.<\/p>\n

      Research shows the language people use can contribute to stigma and discrimination against people with substance use disorders, including by healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n

      The Opioid Crisis<\/h2>\n

      Drug use has health consequences.\u00a0 In Virginia and across the United States, we are facing an opioid crisis.\u00a0 More Virginians die every year from drug overdoses than from automobile crashes.\u00a0 Nationally, there is an overdose death every five minutes.<\/p>\n

      There is hope, too.\u00a0 The opioid crisis has inspired national action.\u00a0 From grassroots groups, to states, and the federal government.\u00a0 In Virginia, we are taking steps toward recovery.\u00a0 Since 2016, when the state health commissioner declared the Virginia opioid crisis to be a public health emergency, state agencies and community agencies have responded.\u00a0 They have and are continuing to offer lifesaving resources to all affected Virginians.<\/p>\n

      The journey away from opioid misuse starts one step at a time.\u00a0 Together, we can curb the crisis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

      Overdose Prevention<\/h1><\/h3>\n

      Drug\u00a0<\/span>use<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>addiction<\/span>\u00a0affect all communities in Virginia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Drug<\/span>\u00a0use\u00a0<\/span>can result in\u00a0<\/span>infections<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>like<\/span>\u00a0HIV<\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>hepatitis C<\/span>, overdoses\u00a0<\/span>needing<\/span>\u00a0emergency\u00a0<\/span>or hospital care<\/span>, and deaths.<\/span> \u00a0VDH provides resources to prevent and respond to drug overdoses and other outcomes in Virginia.\u00a0 <\/span>VDH and other state agencies work to improve health outcomes a<\/span>nd<\/span>\u00a0reduce injury and deaths from\u00a0<\/span>drugs<\/span>, including fentanyl.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Naloxone<\/h2>\n

      Naloxone is a lifesaving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.\u00a0 It is available as a generic drug or under the brand names NARCAN\u00ae and EVZIO\u00ae.\u00a0 Anyone can get naloxone at a Virginia pharmacy without a prescription.<\/p>\n
