{"id":13139,"date":"2025-07-10T22:15:59","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T22:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/disease-prevention\/?p=13139"},"modified":"2025-07-11T16:59:00","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T16:59:00","slug":"theres-a-new-prep-option","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/disease-prevention\/2025\/07\/10\/theres-a-new-prep-option\/","title":{"rendered":"There\u2019s a New PrEP Option!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-13139\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-13139-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-13139-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-13139-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Lenacapavir was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on June 18 for use as HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).\u00a0 It is an injection given twice a year.\u00a0 It will be sold under the brand name Yeztugo (yez-TOO-go).\u00a0 Clinical trials proved the drug blocked HIV in 100% of &gt;2,000 cisgender women who\u2019d received it in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2407001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PURPOSE 1 trial<\/a>.\u00a0 The drug blocked HIV in nearly 100% of&gt;2,000 cisgender men and gender-diverse persons who\u2019d received it in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2411858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PURPOSE 2 trial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lenacapavir (Sunlenca) was approved for HIV treatment in 2022 for people with HIV.\u00a0 This was specific to those with limited treatment options due to drug resistance, intolerance, or safety considerations.\u00a0 Because it is a capsid inhibitor, the chance of developing drug resistance when taking it for PrEP is low.\u00a0 Capsid inhibitors are a new class of medication not used in any other drugs currently.\u00a0 Yeztugo\u2019s price will be comparable to Apretude, the long-acting injectable which was approved for PrEP in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Providers<\/strong>: For more information, refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yeztugohcp.com\/innovation?utm_source=bing&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=us_sem_leph_hiv_hcp_mu_hivp_ma_na_na_b_standard_branded+generic_14jg19&amp;utm_content=677495146%3B1229255134894836%3Bkwd-76828837570268:loc-190&amp;utm_term=lenacapavir&amp;gclid=50d2ea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gilead website<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gilead.com\/-\/media\/files\/pdfs\/medicines\/hiv\/yeztugo\/yeztugo_pi.pdf\">prescribing information<\/a>.
