UCMR 4

Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 4)

The 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendments require that once every five years EPA issue a new list of no more than 30 unregulated contaminants to be monitored by public water systems under the UCMR. Final regulations were published in the Federal Register on December 20, 2016 for the fourth round of monitoring – the UCMR4. A total of 30 chemical contaminants, consisting of 9 cyanotoxins and 1 cyanotoxin group; 2 metals; 8 pesticides and 1 pesticide manufacturing byproduct; 3 brominated haloacetic acid disinfection byproduct groups; 3 alcohols; and 3 semivolatile organic chemicals will be monitored. This program will take place from January 2017 through December 2021, with sample collection occurring between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2020.

Public water systems in Virginia have been selected by the EPA, who will be managing the UCMR4 monitoring program. For additional information, contact Michelle Hoover at EPA Region III, phone: 215-814-5258, email: Hoover.Michelle@epa.gov,
