Hurricane Season Starts June 1

With our focus on COVID-19 response, it is easy to lose track of the fact that today, June 1st, is the start of the 2020 hurricane season. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30 each year. With predictions of an above average hurricane season, it is important to review your emergency plan and preparedness kits to be sure you are ready to respond in a hurricane. Many of you and your agencies/jurisdictions already have hurricane response plans in place. However, with the ongoing response to COVID-19 it is important for everyone to review their agency and family preparedness plans to consider the impact the pandemic may have if a hurricane were to make landfall.

On May 20, 2020, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released, “COVID-19 Pandemic Operational Guidance for the 2020 Hurricane Season.” The guidance provides information on issues specifically related to hurricane planning and response during COVID-19. We will continue to provide updates throughout the hurricane season using social media and our website.
