{"id":126,"date":"2016-01-21T17:05:10","date_gmt":"2016-01-21T17:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/oep\/?page_id=126"},"modified":"2016-03-01T21:34:11","modified_gmt":"2016-03-01T21:34:11","slug":"strategic-national-stockpile-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/emergency-preparedness\/emergency-preparedness\/strategic-national-stockpile-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Strategic National Stockpile Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&#8217;s (CDC) Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) contains large quantities of medicine and medical supplies to help protect the public in the event of a public health emergency such as a terrorist attack, flu outbreak or natural disaster. The SNS is designed to supplement and resupply hospitals, state\/local public health and emergency management agencies when an emergency overwhelms local resources anywhere and at any time within the U.S. or its territories. The SNS may be deployed in several ways to assure federal assets are made available for a wide range of emergencies. The first line of support consists of 12-Hour Push Packages. These are caches of pharmaceuticals, antidotes and medical supplies designed for rapid delivery in the early hours of an event. If the incident requires additional pharmaceuticals and\/or medical supplies, follow-on managed inventory (MI) supplies will be delivered to the Commonwealth usually within about 24-36 hours. If the agent is well-defined, MI can be tailored to provide pharmaceuticals, supplies and\/or products specific to the suspected or confirmed agent(s).<\/p>\n<p>The Commonwealth&#8217;s SNS program is led by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), which acts in close coordination with Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and several other key state agencies.VDH\u2019s Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) coordinates SNS planning and training using an all-hazards approach. EP&amp;R is also responsible for maintaining the state&#8217;s SNS program in compliance with federal grants, statutes and presidential directives.
